What Humans Can Do to Save the Population of Fish
Because of all the destruction humans have caused in the lives of innocent fish, we must do something to save the population in order to save other species of organisms and ourselves as well. People could put restrictions on certain types of fishing technologies, such as bottom draggers or some types of boats. Humans could also work towards burning less fossil fuels so less greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere that cause global warming. Avoiding polluting the delicate Earth is another way humans could help lengthen the lives of fish.
Many people think that refusing to eat fish would also help this cause. This theory is incorrect because it would deprive the consumer of a healthy food as well as not rewarding those who practice sustainable fishing. The sustainably fished fish are usually the best quality fish that are handled with the most care. People should be aware of inexpensive fish as it is likely caught in a careless way. The best fish to eat are lower on the food chain, such as sardines, which also have great health benefits. The fish that are higher up on the food chain are more likely to contain high levels of poisonous materials. Canned tuna comes from a very large species of tuna. This means it is higher on the food chain and therefore less safe to eat. There are, however, some types of fish that should never be eaten because they are so endangered. These fish include, but are not limited to: any type of shark, bluefin tuna, orange roughy, sturgeon caviar, red snapper, imported swordfish, Asia farmed tilapia, and monkfish. Also, demand more information on the fish you consider buying. It is very important that the consumer knows where the fish came from and how it was caught. "The survival of not only the oceans but of our world is at stake." (Kurlansky 171).
